Player Profile: Toumani Camara

Quite possibly the least known youngster here in Belgium of all Belgian Student-Athletes in the USA… and yet, he might actually be the most promising of them all.

The Brussels native started playing basketball at the age of 6 when he joined his local club Saint-Hubert Boitsfort. Six years later he moved on to United Basket Woluwe where he received his first recognition as a player by being selected to the Belgian U16 National Team to compete in the European Championship in the summer of 2016. After this experience the talented forward remained one more season at Woluwe before taking the plunge abroad when he moved to the States to join Chaminade-Madonna Prep school in 2017. It’s here that the youngster really started to show some serious promise as a basketball player and in an excellent summer of 2018 Camara exploded on the national scene and went from an unranked prospect to entering the Top 100. In his second and final year at Chaminade he averaged an impressive 24.3 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.8 spg & 1.4 bpg.

His performances obviously didn’t go unnoticed and after graduation Camara had plenty of options to start his collegiate career with. He eventually settled on Georgia and I think it’s safe to say that both parties can be satisfied with that choice. Despite being a freshman the athletic forward quickly got the confidence of his coaching staff and at the end of December was launched into the starting line-up where he would remain until the end of the season.

All in all he started 23 of his 32 games this season and went on to average 6.6 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 0.7 apg, 0.6 spg & 0.6 bpg in 24.0 mpg. He had his best scoring output in a win against Georgia Southern (Dec. 23) when he finished with 16 pts on a perfect 8-8 FG shooting in what was his 2nd game of the season as a starter. He finished in double-figures scoring 8 times and always worked hard on the boards as well, coming close to a Double-Double on several occasions.

Not bad for a youngster who still has 3 seasons of college ball ahead of him and at TIB we’re certainly going to keep an eye on his continued progression.
